Design on the Border of Technology and Biology Demands Us to ‘Mother’ Nature

Designer and architect Neri Oxman and her mediated matter lab explore design at the intersection of technology and biology. In her TED talk, she leads us into a new age of guided growth, microbial factories, augmented bodies and intimate technologies.

She ends her talk with the most lovable sentence only a female scientist could conceive: "Here is to a new age of design that takes us from a nature inspired design, to a design inspired nature. And that demands from us for the first time that we 'mother' Nature".

Like any parent we trust Neri is to well aware that eventually you cannot control your child. It will surprise you, drive you mad, make you proud, make you modest... and this is beautiful.

Thanks Hartmut.

What is your view on the coronavirus?

Siri Beerends: I really embrace the idea that viruses can teach us a lesson in modesty. It is necessary that our position as the dominant species on the planet is being challenged. I also agree that it is a mistake to think that we are becoming Gods. But unfortunately, this is actually what is happening now. Corona doesn’t teach us to be modest, it teaches us how we can -as quickly as possible- go back to business as usual: saving our capitalistic economy.
