Our hands conform a good part of our nonverbal communication and therefore what we do with our nails constitute an important part of this process. Deep red nail polish is seductive, biting our nails conveys nervousness, a good manicure makes us feel confident and attaching 64GB SD cards to each of our fingers challenges how we store and share information in a world were our digital privacy is at risk. Or at least that’s what the Post-Snowden Nails are aimed to do.

This project created by artists Aram Bartholl and Nadja Buttendorf is a "manicure" that literally puts information at our fingertips. But this simplicity is opposed to the complexity and symbolism of the information kept in the cards of each finger. The middle finger, for instance, is full of computer viruses, making an analogy with the malicious nature of the gesture and the infectious program.

The whole spectrum of nail trends range from crystal clear polish to extravagant extensions adorned with glitter and whatnot, but a cosmetic that makes you feel the information is something new:“I did different experiments with cables, you sort of feel the cable and data pulling on your fingernail, it’s a beautiful way of experiencing data on a body level” Barholl says.

The combative spirit of this project lays the way open for tuture possibilities for wearable technology that can create a deep symbiosis with our bodies in an personal way.
