What is Next Nature?
Next Nature is the nature caused by human culture. That may sound like a contradiction, but really, it isn’t. Our technological world has become so intricate and uncontrollable that it has become a nature of its own. This means we have to re-investigate our notion of nature. Put differently, next nature is culturally emerged nature.
Why Next Nature?
In a landscape of traditional nature organizations, we are the only group that approaches the concept of nature in a new progressive manner. Today, the human impact on our planet cannot be underestimated. Climate change, synthetic biology, mass urbanization – ‘We were here’ echoes all over. Although many people have tried to improve our relationship with nature, only few have asked the elementary question ‘what is nature?’
Our image of nature as static, balanced and harmonic is up for reconsideration. Where others cling on to a rearview mirror view on the world, we aim to go forward to nature. Humanity transforms nature into a next nature that may be wild and unpredictable as ever. Rather than longing back to an idealised image of old nature that never really existed, we better explore how we can dream, build and live in the next nature.
What are Next Nature's goals?
- Share a richer understanding of nature spread awareness and knowledge about the changing relationship between people, nature and technology.
- Balance biology and technology explore how technology is taking on its own natural momentum. Expose and strengthen the connections between the biosphere and the technosphere.
- Save the humans ensure a liveable existence for the people who come after us by charting a path for the future that’s desirable for humanity and for the planet as a whole.
