Inspired by the videogame Ages of Empires, this old-timey map illustrates the most visited websites in each country, with the size of nations altered to reflect the number of Internet users there.

Our web tastes and habits should not be underestimated, as Graham and De Stabbata, Oxford University researchers and authors of the map, write:

“It may well be that the territories carved out now will have important implications for which companies end up controlling how we communicate and access information for many years to come.”

Google prevails in Europe, North America, South Asia and the South Pacific, while Facebook overcomes in the Spanish-speaking parts of the America, the Middle East, and North Africa. The search engine or the social network, which website will conquer the world?
