Behrokh Khoshnevis, NASA engineer from the University of Southern California, is leading a research on robots able to do construction works on Mars and on the Moon.

These robots will 3D print buildings by extruding concrete, in a similar way 3D printers already do with plastic and polymers. The method is called Contour Crafting and you can see it in action in the video above.

It should take astronauts about nine months to reach Mars, and the idea is that at their arrival they will find an infrastructure of buildings and roads. Mars One hopes to begin a permanent colony on Mars by 2024, and SpaceX in 2026. NASA believes that by the mid 2030's astronauts will already be on the Red Planet. Where will this lead? What will we eventually do with the natural landscape of Mars?
