Cybernetic Bugs

British artist Julie Chappell turns old circuit boards and hi-tech gadgets into a new species called Computer Component Bugs. Beetles, dragonflies, butterflies and bugs - made from recycled deconstructed computers, smartphones and consoles - bring back to life old electronic materials.

Chappell was inspired by the wires and the shade in the circuit board components, resistors and capacitor, because they reminded her of bugs' colorful bodies, spindly legs and antennae.

With all their tiny components, complex circuitry and bright metallic colors I cannot help but compare them to the detailed patterns we see when we look at nature up close” the artist explained. “I view the miniature circuit boards with the same curiosity and amazement as I view the natural world”.

Nowadays our society discards a big quantity of electronics, as they become outdated from one day to the next. Chappell designs theses cybernetic insects with the purpose of raising awareness of environmental waste. As she said:

“My collection highlights the dangers of planned obsolescence and the ever-increasing amounts of e-waste in the environment. This is perpetuated by advances in technologies and our ever growing dependence on modern gadgets.

My artworks also hold a great deal of hope. They are my personal tribute to the wonders of modern technologies, the decades of knowledge and passion passed down which led us to them, with all their elegance and ingenuity encompassing the incredible technological aptitude and the imagination, talent and beautiful creativity of the human race”.  Here are some of her creatures.

Should men be able to give birth to children?

Lisa Mandemaker: Using an artificial womb could lead to more equality between sexes, but also between different family layouts. If men would be able to give birth to children, it would maybe be easier for male same-sex couples to have a child together.
